Fubo Implements Uncommon Price Reduction Amidst NBCUniversal Dispute

In a notable decision for a streaming service, Fubo announced today that it is reducing prices for some of its subscription plans.

Fubo, a streaming service with a sports focus known as a virtual multichannel video programming distributor (vMVPD), was recently acquired by Disney in October. The company announced that monthly charges for particular 'Live TV' subscription plans, which include a broad range of channels such as FX and The Disney Channel, will decrease by up to 14.8 percent. This price change will take effect for billing cycles commencing on or after January 1, 2026, according to Fubo.

New subscription prices include:

  • Essential: $74 per month (previously $85/month)
  • Pro: $75/month (previously $85/month)
  • Elite: $84/month (previously $95/month)

Typically, announcements from streaming services regarding pricing involve cost increases. However, for some subscribers, this cut feels essential after Fubo's removal of NBCUniversal channels on November 21. The blackout includes local NBC affiliates, Telemundo, nine regional sports channels, and 32 others such as Bravo, CNBC, MSNBC, and USA Network. Fubo previously stated it would issue a $15 credit to subscribers due to this blackout.

A Fubo spokesperson told Ars Technica that these adjusted prices "reflect NBCU pulling their networks from Fubo." The representative further mentioned the uncertainty about whether the prices would remain if NBCUniversal channels were reinstated, labeling such thoughts as "speculative."

Fubo's NBCUniversal Channel Blackout:

In a statement on November 25, Fubo accused NBCUniversal of excessive pricing demands for channels slated to transition to Versant, a new entity emerging from NBCUniversal's cable channels and digital assets, set to launch in January.

“Despite their status not justifying the cost to Fubo subscribers, Fubo proposed to carry Versant channels for a single year,” Fubo stated. “NBCU insists on a multi-year contract extending beyond when Versant channels will become part of a separate company. NBCU demands Fubo subscribers subsidize these channels.”
