Nintendo Offers Affordable Switch 2 Cartridge Options: Inin Games Updates Release Plans

The recent introduction of data-free, download-enabling Game Key Cards for the Switch 2 has sparked controversy among players concerned about long-term ownership and access issues. Nevertheless, they remain a favored choice for publishers looking to cut production expenses associated with boxed Switch 2 game releases, as these cards omit the pricey flash memory of standard cartridges.

However, a shift may be on the horizon. At least one publisher has indicated that Nintendo is now providing more economical Switch 2 cartridge options that feature reduced storage capacities, potentially lowering manufacturing costs. This development could make full cartridge releases a more feasible option for many titles on the console.

Earlier this week, Inin Games, the publisher of R-Type Dimensions III, communicated to customers that switching from Game Key Cards to a complete physical cartridge for its Switch 2 release would "significantly raise[ing] manufacturing costs," leading to a price increase of at least €15 (approximately $20) at retail.

However, in a social media update today, the publisher shared that "there is no better timing: two days ago Nintendo announced two new smaller cartridge [storage capacity] sizes for Nintendo Switch 2." This advancement has allowed Inin to reassess production costs in ways that were previously unfeasible.

As a result, Inin announced the decision to use full physical cartridges instead of Game Key Cards for the game's retail version. While this shift will cause a price increase of €10 (about $13) due to remaining production costs, it is less than the previously estimated increase of at least €15. Furthermore, Inin assured that early pre-order customers of R-Type Dimensions III will incur no additional cost and will receive the full cartridge version at the original price.
