Marvel Studios found itself adjusting its promotional strategy thanks to an unexpected leak. Initially, the studio had mapped out an elaborate approach to introduce four teaser trailers for Avengers: Doomsday. These trailers were set to debut as previews before screenings of Avatar: Fire and Ash, with a new teaser released each week. However, the first teaser leaked online prematurely, showcasing, to the fans' delight, Steve Rogers/Captain America (Chris Evans) appearing with a newborn, speculated to be with Hayley Atwell's Peggy Carter.
In response to the leak, Marvel has officially released an HD version of the teaser just in time for the holiday season. Fans can anticipate three more teasers: one highlighting Thor, another focusing on Doctor Doom, and a final one that's expected to be a more conventional teaser trailer.
The shift in promotional content follows significant casting changes. Marvel Studios had originally charted its Phase Six Avengers narrative around Kang the Conqueror, played by Jonathan Majors. However, following Majors' conviction for domestic violence and subsequent dismissal from the studio, Marvel had to pivot its plans. This led to reintroducing Anthony and Joe Russo, directors of some of Marvel Cinematic Universe's highest-grossing films, grossing over $6 billion globally.
Rather than recasting Kang, the Russo brothers decided to embark on a different narrative direction, opting to adapt their favored Secret Wars storyline for the big screen. Before they can delve into Avengers: Secret Wars, which is set for release in May 2027, they are tasked with creating Avengers: Doomsday, featuring the beloved comics villain Doctor Doom. Notably, this film marks the return of Robert Downey Jr. to the MCU, taking on this iconic adversarial role.
