Idris Elba

Actor Idris Elba has been knighted in recognition of his extensive charity work with young people, while Sarina Wiegman, the coach of the England women's football team, is made an honorary dame for leading the Lionesses to victory in last summer's Euros.

In this year's New Year Honours, the recognition extends to the figure skating duo Jayne Torvill and Christopher Dean, who are awarded a damehood and knighthood respectively. The honors list also acknowledges the achievement of the Red Roses in winning the Women's Rugby Union World Cup.

The 2023 Honours include 1,157 recipients, with Wiegman and many Lionesses celebrated for their success in the European Championships. England's captain and two-time European champion Leah Williamson becomes a CBE, while players Ella Toone, Keira Walsh, Alex Greenwood, and Georgia Stanway receive MBEs for their roles in the triumph.

Television and Film

Warwick Davis, Meera Syal and Bill Bailey

Luther star Idris Elba is now Sir Idris, honored for his anti-knife crime campaign and the Elba Hope Foundation, which he co-founded with his wife Sabrina to provide grants across the UK, the US, and Africa. Reflecting on his own young experience as a beneficiary of the Prince's Trust, Elba commented on the honor as a tribute to the young people inspired by his foundation.

Meera Syal, recognized for her contributions to drama, literature, and charity, joins the ranks as Dame Meera. She is lauded for Goodness Gracious Me and her role in The Kumars at No. 42. Roy Clarke, noted for writing Last of the Summer Wine and Open All Hours, is knighted, while actor and presenter Warwick Davis expresses his delight at receiving an OBE, calling it a significant life event.

Little Britain comedian Matt Lucas and author Richard Osman are also honored with OBEs, while Bill Bailey, actor Sally Lindsay, and children's TV star Paul Chuckle receive MBEs. Additionally, sports broadcaster Gabby Logan and football commentator Clive Tyldesley are awarded OBEs, and TV chef Marcus Wareing and Phil Spencer, presenter of Location, Location, Location, earn MBEs.

Cynthia Erivo and Ellie Goulding

In the arts sector, actor and singer Cynthia Erivo is given an MBE, as is singer Ellie Goulding, recognized for her environmental advocacy. Scottish singer Eve Graham, formerly of the New Seekers, is also named MBE. Erivo, who appeared in Wicked and its upcoming sequel, calls the acknowledgment "an honour I could never have thought would happen." The list also highlights contributions from classical music experts, with conductor Richard Farnes and opera singer Alice Coote receiving CBEs for their impact on the classical music scene.
